Becoming the Men They Were Meant To Be: Helping Sexually Abused Males

Approximately one in six boys is sexually abused before age 16. Often males who have been sexually traumatized and/or abused behaviorally act out homosexually—also known as homosexual imprinting. Some of these males are gay and most are not. Males who have been sexually abuse are often confused as to their sexual orientation because of the trauma. These men—both gay and straight—re-enact the trauma through homosexual behavior as adults. The new term for these men are MSM (Men having sex with men). This workshop will explore how to intervene with this population.

Sex with the City: Treating Sex Addictions
While the prohibitions around discussing addiction to alcohol and drugs have been largely lifted, the taboo around sexual addiction is still powerful and silencing. Yet sexual addiction and compulsivity are on the rise, and many clients and therapists are in the dark about how best to treat sexual acting-out behaviors. In this workshop, you’ll learn how to assess sexual addiction and help clients gain control over their sexual behavior. You’ll discover how the client’s erotic love maps, which include fantasy and ritualized behavior, can provide the blueprint for recovery, and learn a variety of treatment interventions for clients and their partners. We’ll also discuss recent research on effective medications for sexual addictions and assess if and when you should prescribe them.

Gay-Affirmative Couples Therapy for Straight Therapists
You’re a gay-friendly couples therapist, and even though you’re straight, you’re sensitive to homophobia and heterosexist attitudes. So you’re able to do effective therapy with gay and lesbian couples, right? Wrong. Without specific training, both straight and gay couples therapists can unintentionally harm their clients. In this workshop, you’ll gain new understanding of the special clinical issues, such as transference, stages of coming out, and the connection between sexuality and shame, involved in working with gay and lesbian couples. Via discussion, guided imagery, and case examples, you’ll learn about the “doubling” factor in gay and lesbian couples, responsible nonmonogamy among gay male couples, and loss of sexual desire among lesbian couples. You’ll leave with specific interventions and assessment tools that promote gay-affirmative couples therapy.

The Rainbow Warriors of Chicago
The Rainbow Warriors of Chicago are happy to announce that relationship therapist Joe Kort, who presented the widely attended seminar "Sex, Shadow and Love" to MKP Chicago last year, is returning on November 13 with a new workshop entitled "Rapture or Rupture?"

This new workshop will teach concepts and tools in a specialized program which helps solve the mystery of why we are romantically attracted to the people we are drawn to, what happens when we are "stuck" in a power struggle with this person and how to resolve the conflict in a healthy, mature and effective manner.

The workshop will be held at the Kuempel Men's Center at 1900 W. Fulton on November 13 from 10am - 3pm.

The advanced registration fee will be $20 or $25 at the door. Lunch is included. For registration, you may contact Kerry Fleming at kwflemin@rcn.com or by phone at 773-907-0366.

This is a community event and all adults are invited to attend. Looking forward to seeing you all there for this exciting and informative workshop on November 13th!

QUEER EAR FOR THE STRAIGHT THERAPIST
The Essentials of Gay Affirmative Psychotherapy

Growing up gay can cause developmental injuries around identity and competency, as well as, intimacy and sexuality, which can lead to adult relational disorders and other mental health problems. Because psychotherapy is largely focused on presenting symptoms, these developmental injuries are rarely addressed in treatment.

This workshop prepares clinicians to address the frequently overlooked developmental injuries and covert, internalized heterosexism and homophobia symptoms of the gay and lesbian client. An effective psychodynamic, relational approach which affirms gay / lesbian identity and sexuality will be presented. Clinical issues, such as transference, stages of coming out, family and relationship dynamics, and the connection between sexuality and shame, will be discussed. Via discussion, guided imagery, and case examples, the presenter will share specific interventions and assessment tools that promote gay - affirmative therapy.

Typically, the focus in psychotherapy is on presenting symptoms, therefore, the developmental injuries around identity and competency, as well as, intimacy and sexuality of gay and lesbian clients are rarely addressed in treatment. This workshop prepares clinicians to address the frequently overlooked developmental injuries and the covert internalized heterosexism and homophobia symptoms of the gay and lesbian client, and presents an effective psychodynamic, relational approach which affirms gay / lesbian identity and sexuality.

Sexual addiction and compulsivity is on the rise for men and women, particularly with the expanding internet bringing ease to sexual hookups and online porn. Because of sexual shame, clients often are afraid to talk about their sexual acting out behaviors and clinicians are not sure what to do once the sexual behavior is reported. This workshop will help clinicians accurately assess and treat sexual addiction. Participants will be learn the tools and treatment planning to help men recover from out of control sexual behavior. The treatment planning often involves assessing the clients erotic mapping and ritualized sexual behavior. The secret logic of the sexual fantasy and behavior can provide the nonsexual map to recovery. Various modalities of therapy along with the most recent research of effective medications for this disorder will also be addressed.

The New "Mixed" Marriage: When Gay and Straight Spouses Stay Together

Imago International Conference
www.imagotherapy.com
October 26-30, 2005 Atlanta Georgia

What do you do when, in the course of couples therapy, one spouse comes out to the other as gay? In a rush of countertransference, many therapists see divorce as the only option. Yet, given time, such couples may decide to remain together, with certain adjustments. This workshop will explore the treatment issues for the new mixed marriage, from how therapists can recognize their countertransference and keep it from interfering to ways they can tailor therapy to the couple's unique needs. Participants will learn how to facilitate dialogue between the partners to deal with the straight spouse's reactivity and the gay spouse's guilt, and how to help the couple decide what's best for them.

Objectives:

A) Participants will be able to understand their own countertransference toward these couples and avoid it interfering with them providing treatment.

B) Participants will learn to assist both partners in recognizing their own accountability in terms of why they married and what to do now that they know without blame and defensiveness.

C) Participants will identify the stages of coming out for the couple as well as the gay spouse and straight spouse independent from the relationship.

D) Participants will learn the differences between how male and female spouses, both gay and straight, handle the coming out process of the "mixed marriage" differently.

"Queer Eye for the Straight Therapist Trainings"
for psychotherapists and other helping professionals working with Lesbians and Gays

Friday, January 21, 2005 | 2:00 to 4:00 PM
Laurel Park Best Western
16999 Laurel Park Drive, Livonia

Let us know you'll be there. Call 248.557.8621

Most therapists, gay and straight alike, assume that their awareness of homophobia and heterosexist attitudes ensures they’ll do no harm. But it’s not enough to be a gay-friendly therapist, even if you’re gay or lesbian. Without being armed with specific training, gay and straight therapists are at a disadvantage, and will unintentionally harm their gay and lesbian clients. This workshop will explore such clinical issues as transference, stages of coming out, family and relationship dynamics, and the connection between sexuality and shame. Via discussion, guided imagery, and case examples, the presenter will describe specific interventions and assessment tools that promote gay-affirmative therapy.

Learning Objectives

  1. Describe specific interventions and assessment tools for each stage of coming out, sexual development, and relationships.

  2. Discuss the data and facts in working with gays and lesbians to minimize therapists bias, feelings, and opinions being transferred to the client.

  3. Address psychotherapist’s own over and covert homonegativity and heterosexism as therapeutic considerations in addressing transference and countertransference with this population

Joe will be the Keynote speaker on Lesbians and Gays Parenting

October 24, 2004, Ann Arbor, Michigan

"Do Your Homo-work! Our Kids, Our Reactions, and Homophobia"

How we raise our children can raise a parent's unresolved issues from their own childhood. It can also reveal how we were parented as children. Most minorities teach their children how to deal with discrimination. As Lesbians and gays, we were not taught how to handle homophobia as children, rendering us ill equipped in how to protect our own children. This lecture will address these issues and help you identify effective ways to create a safe, supportive and nurturing household for both queer parents and their children.
