Having a Social Work background, I have always wanted to be a resource to people and guide them to the right people and places for the help they required. My website reflects my personal and professional knowledge in terms of getting people the right and most accurate information.

4. What do you get when you cross a therapist and a comedian?
|
A Therapedian! I was talking to my 11-year old-nephew about my starting to do stand up and he looked at me and said, "Hmmm, you are a therapist and and comedian that makes you a therapian!" I thought that was very clever and use it at the start of my act.
In the summer of 2008 I took an 8 week course at a local comedy club doing stand-up comedy. I have always used humor in my presentations, workshops and even in the therapy room at times to help people cope with some of their issues.
As many of you know who have read my books and articles and listened to me at my talks I was raised in a very neglectful and abusive environment where there was little affection, love and nurturing.
The one good thing that did occur from my family was lots of humor. That is, perhaps, the most positive thing I recieved from my childhood and it has served me well today. I find humor in almost all of my own personal struggles as well as in the most difficult life situations.
Given all of this I hope you will watch my comedy act and take it in the spirit it is meant. I hope it makes you laugh. I have more coming as I do various clubs in amateur night shows.

5. Book Review: Male Sexuality: Why Women Don't Understand It--And Men Don't Either

I reviewed author Michael Bader's first book in 2004, Arousal: The Secret Logic of Sexual Fantasies which can be found at my website here http://www.joekort.com/articles20.htm
Now he turns his attention solely onto men and continues his thinking about why men behave and fantasize in the sexual ways they do.
He writes in his book:
This is a book about the value of understanding (male sexuality). It assumes that when we oversimplify male sexuality or demonize any form of it, everyone suffers. It assumes that when men understand themselves, they feel less shame, and that when women understand men, they fel more connecte to men and more compassionate. And it assumes that when both men and women understand how the world shapes and hurts their sexuality, they are more equipped to change it.
Bader also is inclusive talking about gay and bisexual men's sexual behaviors as well. I really enjoy the way he explains the reasons for men's sexual expressions and have used his work in helping my clients feel better--and get better- around their sexual issues.
