3.Book Review: Gay Affirmative Therapy for the Straight Clinician: The Essential Guide

published in Therapy Today, November 2008 issue.

Gay affirmative therapy for the straight clinician: the essential guide
Joe Kort
WW Norton & Company 2008
ISBN 978-0393704976
£19.99

published in the UK Magazine Therapy Today, November 2008 issue

The comprehensive text is broken into small sections which aid clarity on each page.
The author involves himself in the text as counsellor and supervisor and therapists are given
specific suggestions on how they should treat their clients, illustrated with plenty of relevant case
examples.

Kort’s interesting concept is that lesbian and gay people suffer not only from internalised homophobia, but
actually from posttraumatic stress disorder rooted in their upbringing of ‘covert cultural sexual abuse’ and family disapproval.
He references Erikson’s developmental model, but identifies ‘developmental insults’, and suggests a differential diagnosis
using gay affirmative therapy principles for common mental health disorders.

4. Sexual Disorientation: Am I Gay, Bisexual, Straight or Somewhere in Between?
So many men who read Straight Guise tell me that my discussions of straight men who have sex with men ( SMSMs) confuses them because before coming out, gay and bisexual men are often in denial and convince themselves that they are 100% straight.

I even receive e-mails, some of them hostile, from gay men who accuse me of keeping gay and bisexual men closeted by citing the ways in which men might still be straight and have sex with men.

They often write, in effect, “If I had read Straight Guise during the years I was in denial and lying to myself, I’d have felt comfort in thinking I was straight and gone on leading an inauthentic heterosexual life.”

For them, staying closeted was fraught with lying to themselves that they were essentially straight, with simply a “kinky” side or that their sexual interests were just that—sexual—and not about their identity. They now have great remorse over the lost years when they could have lived as openly gay men. The trauma of staying closeted was so painful that it strikes a nerve to learn that it's possible to go through all that and still be straight.

It is reductionistic to assume that having sex with the same gender, in and of itself, makes someone gay or bisexual. That seems to be the worst form of homophobia, contributing to the myth—seized on by reparative therapists and others heterosexists—who define homosexuality as merely sexual behavior.

Being gay or bisexual entails much more than just sex. If a gay or bisexual man never engaged in sexual behavior for the rest of his life, he would still be gay, because that is his identity, not a description of how he behaves.

How do you know if you are gay, bisexual, or a straight man who has sex with men?

5. Marital Affairs--Political: Proposition 8

Many of you are aware by now about the passing of Proposition 8 in California on November 4, 2009.

According to Wikipedia:

Proposition 8 was a California State ballot proposition that amended the state Constitution to restrict the definition of marriage to a union between a man and a woman. It overrode a recent California Supreme Court decision that had recognized same-sex marriage in California as a fundamental right. The official ballot title language for Proposition 8 is "Eliminates Right of Same-Sex Couples to Marry." The entirety of the text to be added to the constitution was: "Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California."

I found the best response to the passing of Propostion 8 to be by Keith Olbermann who did a special comment about it on his MSNBC show Countdown with Keith Olbermann.
